Metaphor/Stop Listening to Crap Official 2008 Rundown

What is the essence of adept or good music? Is it the mere ability to catch people’s attention or has it had to do with the virtuoso style of creating the songs which somehow makes it unique from other pieces?
I couldn’t answer that. In some ways, music has its own relativity. For almost 500 posts here in Play which 6 months later became Metaphor (to those who remember, thank you), I had come across to unlikely music talents traversing from different refinements.
There had been moments this year where after I listen to a downright amazing piece I wanted to put a stamp stating “THIS IS THE REAL MUSIC” on the foreheads of those poor souls who aggravate themselves by listening to craptastic automatonlike voices on their speakers. What happened to “originals”? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe in stereotyping. I adhere to different genres including remixes and mainstream (I had even posted several here) and even though we all have our own comfort zones in our choice of music, I tried my best to be diverse and unbiased as possible. Anyhow, this is just a reminder, I cant influence you on what to listen and what to not.
This special post with its beguiling enormity is the Metaphor’s Official 2008 Rundown. I couldn’t decide what to include if alternatively I choose to have a limited list. Preferably, I included all artists I have fallen in love this year in superlative degree (cream of the crop as such). I shied away from already popular figures so as to give way to these unknown artists. The order and the choice of images are in random prospect. Check out the mixtapes (by month), they’ll be worth your time.
Hopefully this post will resolute your own music preferences. Support pop culture!

MUST DISCOVER ARTISTS VOL. VI
Before anything else, apologies, and endless apologies for the staggering delay of posts this month. Anyone can agree that December is indeed a crazy month. Its really therefore an effort to be not swallowed by December rush. I wont keep you waiting, I know you had waited for this. Here is another volume (hopefully not the last this year) of amazing artists mostly already known but somehow overlooked. I repeat, I do not intend to make these artist more worthy of praises than those I don’t post here. I just try to shovel rubles and rubles of popular indie genre per se.
Enjoy! As for you still wondering, Metaphor will stay, sharing spectacular sounds from different constellations. Woah, cant believe this blog reached this season. lol. Merry Christmas everyone and have a joyous new year ahead!

At age five, Max Vernon was politely asked to leave his hippy New York pre-school, Rudolph Steiner, for repeatedly questioning the plot of See Spot Run during story hour. This early disillusionment no doubt left its mark on the impressionable young boy: by age nine, he was already leading a turbulent double life filled with drugs, sex, and Joni Mitchell cds. After selling enough crack rocks to buy a piano, Max soon realized his affinity with the instrument and decided to craft a few songs, which followed the spirit of his original infantile question: Why are we doing this? …A question that is now more important than ever.
Despite continued FBI surveillance, Max Vernon’s songs have recently been having a love affair with the Internet, getting many music blog write-ups and coverage in New York Magazine and the Toronto Star.

The Dodos formed in the early part of 2006 in San Francisco; shortly afterward, band member Meric Long released an EP entitled “Dodo Bird.” In support of this EP Long and Logan Kroeber toured intermittently from July through September 2006, after which they released their first album, entitled “Beware of the Maniacs.” In 2007, the band signed to the Frenchkiss record label. In 2008, the band released a second album entitled “Visiter” and began a 17-venue springtime national tour.
Noah and the Whale is an alternative/folk group formed in Twickenham, London, England in 2006. They consist of Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar), Laura Marling (vocals, guitar), Tom Hobden (fiddle), Matt Urby (bass) and Doug Fink (drums). They released their debut album “Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down” – which contains the UK Top 10 hit “5 Years Time” – in August of 2008.

Santogold (name: Santi White) is a songwriter, producer, and singer from Philadelphia who has been active since 2003.
Santogold was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock, ska band. Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Santogold’s style has been defined as a mix of dub, electronic, indie rock, new wave, and punk rock.

Hailing from Eel Pie Island, London, England Mystery Jets are a prog/psychedelia-influenced British indie band who refer to as many genres as they like without being bound by any of them. M83 (named after the spiral galaxy “Messier 83”) is electronicartist Anthony Gonzalez. Gonzalez and former member Nicolas Fromageau founded the group in 2001 in Antibes, France. M83’s style owes a lot to the shoegaze genre, in that there is much emphasis on tonality, extensive use of reverb effects and often softly-spoken lyrics at times submerged in instrumentation.

Hercules and Love Affair is a musical project from New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony and the Johnsons). The album has been critically well-received and charted in the top 40 in several countries.

Los Campesinos! are an indie pop band which formed in Cardiff, Wales in 2006. The band consists of Gareth Campesinos! (vocals, glockenspiel), Aleksandra Campesinos! Hot Chip are an electrorock band which formed in London, United Kingdom in 2000. Sigur Rós is an icelandic slow-motion rock band (according to the band’s own definition) with post-rock and shoegaze elements. The name is derived from the name of lead vocalist Jónsi Birgisson’s little sister Sigurrós. According to their website, it is pronounced “si-ur rose”. They hail from the same creative and vibrant Icelandic music scene as múm and Amiina. They released their first ever foray into film-making with their tour documentary, Heima in late 2007.

Cut Copy is an indietronic band from Melbourne, Australia made up of Dan Whitford (lead vocals/keys/guitar), Tim Hoey (bass/guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums), Bennett Foddy being a former member.
Their sound, perhaps best labeled as retro/electropop, is much in the vein of contemporaries such as Daft Punk, drawing considerable influence from older bands such as New Order and Kraftwerk.

Weird Story. I was listening to an Amy Winehouse song (Stronger ) as one of my friends approach me and asked what’s Winehouse strongest song to boot. She was making a playlist or slidehow of some sort, I couldnt remember the specifics.
Note: We spoke in our own vernacular language but these are translated for your own cause.
Me: Hmmm, try her songs from her latest album (Back to Black)….
F: I dont want to listen to the whole album. Can you just give me mp3s or do you think I should just go with Rihanna, Britney or other artist with a more respectable rep?

Newsflash: I also like Lily Allen.
Several new songs of Lily Allen just surfaced for her upcoming sophomore album, “Its Not Me, Its You” which will be released February 9, 2009,. For the past months shes been partaking singles through her myspace. Popjustice had given a lot of reasons why you should love the new album. My take on the other hand is, Allen doesnt seem to fail to reverend me with her ridiculous antics while keeping her enjoyable and strong direct on music.
